Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a type of nonmelanoma skin cancer. It is most common in sun-exposed areas such as the head, neck, back of the hands and lower legs, but can occur anywhere. The use of tanning beds significantly increases the risk of developing SCC. Although SCC can rarely spread to other parts of the body, in most cases it can be cured with an outpatient procedure. It is important to see your dermatologist if you notice a new or changing skin lesion.
