Rosacea is a common skin disease.  It often begins with a tendency to blush or flush more easily than other people.  The most frequently involved areas are the cheeks and nose, but it may also extend to the forehead, chin, and even ears, chest, and back.  Rosacea may be limited to redness, flushing and visible blood vessels, but can also include acne-like breakouts, swelling, a thickened and bumpy quality to the nose or redness and irritation of the eyes.

A number of treatments are available for this condition and the best choice is dependent upon the specific type of rosacea.  Important skin care measures for those with rosacea include sun protection and regular use of a moisturizer along with prescription medication.  For further treatment options, see the American Academy of Dermatology's website.

Possible Rosacea triggers include:

  • sun exposure
  • emotional stress
  • hot or cold weather
  • wind
  • alcohol
  • spicy foods
  • heavy exercise
  • hot baths
  • hot beverages
